Swine Flu Drives Up Face Mask Demand
The effort to stop the spread of swine flu causes a run on face masks.
“I’ve never seen anything like it, “ Rob Remitz said, whose company, Southern Medical Distributors, sells face masks.
Remitz said the phone has not stopped ringing since the swine flu outbreak, and many of the calls are from Mexican health officials.
“I'd say we had probably 20 calls from Nuevo Laredo, Guadajalara. I mean, pretty much every city on the border wanting anywhere from 500,000 to 1 million,” he said.
"When I tell them I have 1,000, they say, 'I'll take it now,' but that's not even going to take a dent out of what they really want,” he said. "I've never see a country so desperate for masks."
Remitz said he had more than 30,000 masks on Monday.
Only 1,000 were available Wednesday afternoon.
“I could have sold all of them right away. In a matter of a minutes. It's almost like a concert when the tickets sell out right away,” he said.
Remitz has rationed his remaining face masks.
“We have probably 30 customers that are going to get 2 boxes. Very happy customers," he said.
Remitz has tried to order more masks.
"We tried to get more and our supplier wouldn't let us get more,” he said.
He said the U.S. government has bought up the nation’s supply, but more masks are on their way from China and should arrive next week.
Health officials say only people who suspect they have swine flu need to wear face masks.
Face mask making machine and disposable mask are all available from our company.
